The Smurfs came to be on television when then- NBC president Fred Silverman saw how much his daughter liked a Smurf doll she had been given.
A characteristic of the Smurf language is the frequent use of the word "smurf" and its derivatives1 in a variety of meanings. The Smurfs replace enough nouns and verbs in everyday speech with "smurf" as to make their conversations barely understandable: "We"re going smurfing on the River Smurf today."
According to the original magazine that published The Smurfs comics, there are 105 Smurfs. The two most famous are Papa Smurf, the leader of the Smurfs who always wears red clothes and has a bushy white beard, and Smurfette. Greedy in the cartoon series combines the personalities of two Smurfs found in the original comics: Chef, the village cook; and Greedy, the village glutton2 and food thief.
What the Smurfs wear are Phrygian3 or Liberty caps. In Roman times, the cap was worn by former slaves to symbolize their freedom. During the 18th century, red Phrygian cap became a symbol of liberty.

Benco Instant Choco Drink is a popular Dutch chocolate drink. In the 1970s and 80s the company"s mascot was a Benco jar with face, hands and feet. A series of ads for Benco were published in comics in Europe with Benco living with the Smurfs and using his chocolate drink in order to sort out their problems: like getting Brainy Smurf to stop lecturing the other Smurfs; awakening Lazy Smurf from a deep sleep; or a reward for hard work.
The Smurfs might have been able to hide their village from Gargamel, but not from aerial bombardments! In an advertisement by United Nation Children"s Fund, the Smurfs were used to raise money for the rehabilitation4 of former child soldiers in Burundi: The short film opens with the Smurfs dancing, hand-in-hand, around a campfire and singing the "Smurf Song". Without warning, bombs begin to rain from the sky. Tiny Smurfs scatter and run in vain from the whistling bombs. The final scene shows a tattered Baby Smurf sobbing inconsolably6, surrounded by prone7 Smurfs. The final frame bears the message: "Don"t let war affect the lives of children."
